Chivvy the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco if you like for giving space to yet another Impressionist-era show, this one holds enough treasures that it made use of the words "treasures" and "masterpieces" unnecessary in its title: "Intimate Impressionism From the National Gallery of Art.
The exhibition, which opens Saturday at the Legion of Honor, samples one of the world's great public collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. It invitingly presents 70 paintings at small scale: "intimate" both in soliciting close views and in betokening late 19th century French painters' habits of working together outdoors and of making one another gifts or exchanges of modest pictures.
Some of the modern paintings most treasured by visitors to the National Gallery - beach scenes by Eugene Boudin, portraits by Auguste Renoir , still lifes by Paul Cezanne and Henri Fantin-Latour - offer inroads to the more surprising things on view. A couple of pictures by Edouard Vuillard , known for psychologically airless images of domestic interiors, startle.
In "Landscape of the Ile-de-France" circa Vuillard applied his manner of stacking receding planes without gradation to a view of distant hills under a cloud-jammed sky.
The effect comes even closer than do Georges Seurat 's two pictures here to making the eye imagine itself as an organ of touch. Vuillard's arresting and more characteristic "Vase of Flowers on a Mantelpiece" circa stands at the threshold of abstraction. Its double aspect - its readiness to be read equally as pure pattern and as idiosyncratic description - echoes back through the show, awakening visitors' eyes to the peculiar aesthetic poise of early Modernist painting.
Edouard Manet's " George Moore in the Artist's Garden" circa exemplifies in spades the sparse, brushy technique that brought Manet and his acolytes opprobrium early on and admiration ever since.
But notice how Manet has coaxed light from flickers of unpainted canvas and how his daringly succinct rendering of the uneven set of Moore's eyes, of his posture, hair and beard leave a viewer feeling certain of being able to recognize the man were he to stroll by.
